Tom Hanks as Walt Disney???

"Saving Mr. Banks" is a proposed live-action movie about Walt Disney's attempts to get the rights of and produce a movie based on books in the UK about "Mary Poppins".  The proposed star:  Tom Hanks as Walt Disney.  Ironically, after Walt Disney died eventually Walt's son-in-law Ron Miller became CEO.  Miller is who started the division of Disney Studios called Touchstone Pictures in order to make mass-market live-action films not always associated with "family" films Disney was usually known for.  The first or one of the first movies was "Splash", a romantic comedy about a guy falling in love with a mermaid.  The female star was Darryl Hannah.  The male lead went to a young actor named....  Tom Hanks!  Eventually when Ron Miller's wife's (Diane Disney Miller, Walt's daughter) uncle Roy Disney Jr. (son of Walt's brother Roy) helped overthrow the 1984 attempt to take over Disney and Roy Jr. got Frank Wells and Michael Eisner in from Paramount to head up Disney, they all got rid of Ron Miller as CEO.  "Mr. Banks" was the children's corporate-minded, serious, strict, never spent any time with his children in a loving way father in the movie "Mary Poppins".

I am skeptical of, and wary to go to, any movie starring Tom Hanks - Walt Disney or no Walt Disney. His ethics and morals regarding some of his directing efforts have been just a little alienating to me. :(

Early reviews are being posted at Rotten Tomatoes.com and the consensus is good news for Disney :  86% Fresh for “Saving Mr. Banks”!  More reviews will be posted, and of course that rating might go up or down.

And after seeing some early promotional clips on Facebook, and read articles via Google News, call me a convert rather than a skeptic!  Looking forward to this !

Now the early Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes.com is 90% Fresh !  And it's Oscar season, the time when the movies are particularly marketed and heave year-end release dates to those who have Oscar nomination ballots to fill out.  Check out the reviews at the sites mentioned in the Quote Box, opens in limited release Dec. 13, 2013, wide release Dec. 20, 2013.

Disney classic movie and DVD collector fans: Look at the review of the new re-release of "Mary Poppins" to DVD and Blu-Ray in conjunction with the theatrical release of "Saving Mr. Banks".  Consider for gift giving, or a present for yourself, owning this for the extra bonus material!

All three of us in our family (including a nearly 18-year old boy ! ) LOVED this movie !  Bring Kleenex, it ends very emotionally.  Stay through closing credits, they play an audio recording of story sessions with the real PL Travers.  When the audio recording is over then you can leave the theater.  Major thumbs up from us !

81% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes.

READING BELOW THIS LINE MAY HAVE SPOILERS BUT IT HAS TO DO WITH A PARENTAL ADVISORY.

The following is not strictly "a spoiler" since if you read movie reviews they feature story synopsis and this is mentioned.  But for parents, you might have some explaining to do to young people.

Parents:

This film is rated for mature audiences PG and for young to be accompanied by parents or guardians.  There's some explaining to do to youth about the effects of alcoholism on the drinker and the drinker's close family.  As portrayed in the movie (in the closing credits they acknowledge a biography of PL Travers for source material) PL Travers had a particularly troubled childhood related to her alcoholic father and the "illness" of it that spread to her family at the time and affected PL Travers, unresolved, into her adulthood and including the time of her life working on the "Mary Poppins" movie.

So parents you'll maybe need to explain the idea of drug addiction and alcoholism, that those around the addicted alcoholic can also have a related issue called "enabling".  It's a teachable moment.  Research alcoholism, co-dependence, enabling, treatments, consequences for the alcoholic, the drug addict, and their close loved ones who might get scars for a lifetime unless they enroll in treatment and support groups.
