I want to promote this wonderful museum, founded by Walt and Lillian Disney's surviving child, Diane Disney Miller, which tells the family's side of Walt's life, founding of the company, career, passing, and enduring cultural and film industry legacy.

Here is it's official website.  Read up.  So many artifacts owned by the Family and heirs are on display, with rotating exhibits and even major Disney speakers about Walt's life, legacy, career.

http://www.waltdisney.org

It's in the Presidio part of metro San Francisco.  Consult the link for operating days of the week, hours, special exhibits or speakers, location.

You can also pay dues to join as a Member, and get perks such as advance notices and invitations… If you happen to be in the S. F. area to be able to attend those.  It can be very frustrating as a Disney fan to hear so-and-so will be speaking and realize you live hundreds and thousands of miles away and can't just hop a plane and go attend!  Of course joining helps the Museum with funding and perpetuating itself and can be very special for Walt fans to be a part of no matter where in the US or world you live.  Major donors if they hear WDFM has X-number of members and growing might be inclined to make major donations and grants.  So consider joining as a Member to help them out.

Unfortunately, the Museum's holdings do not tour any place.  Meaning if you want to see Walt's things, you have to go to S.F.  As a non-profit entity they rely on memberships, ticket sales, and donations.  Some artifacts went this year to visit Boston MA.  That's as close to "touring the country" as things get.

People who visit their Presidio location LOVE IT !

You can also see Walt's old Train Barn at Griffith Park in the Los Angeles area, on select days of the week/operating hours.

Neither the Train Barn or Family Museum are owned or operated or funded or promoted by The Walt Disney Company.  These are two non-profit entities that are separate from the Company.  And you might not hear about them at Disney-owned D23 Conventions.  No "haters" going on, just….  separate entities.

In Walt's hometown of Marceline MO there is also a tribute to Walt Disney and I think a small non-profit museum there, also non-affiliated with The Walt Disney Company.

If you like what you see online about The Walt Disney Family Museum, or Walt's Train Barn, or anything going on in Marceline MO, consider "liking" their pages on Facebook, following them on Twitter, and passing the word along to any Disney enjoying friends of yours or fans of the man, Walt Disney.

Yes, there is a little at the various Disney theme parks about Walt and his life, mostly coming from the Company's own archives.

But the bulk of what to see and learn about Walt Disney and his family and legacy is NOT at Disneyland or Walt Disney World.

You might ask, "Why not at the parks since that's where I'll always be, I can't tear myself away?"  Answer is because of the passion by fans, those who used to work with Walt and their survivors, and Walt's family, to be in charge of how they want to present their artifacts and memories of Walt's life story, vs. how the Company wants to.  It is what it is.

These gems of tributes and Museums are well worth seeing in person if you are a Disney fan if you can go see the US other than Disneyland and WDW.

So check them out online!

  :pixiedust:  :WaltDisney3:

Disclaimer:  Rich and I have never visited… too far away from where we live !  I want to spread the word this Museum, and other similar places, exist.  Well worth it.  We HAVE seen Walt's Train Barn, however, and I promise you that is hugely worth seeing if you honor Walt Disney the man.

If you like WDFM, Walt's Train Barn and/or Marceline MO then PLEASE spread the word to fellow Disney fans !  And ask them to further spread the word, and so forth  Positive word of mouth helps!  And consider going to see these sometime.

You wouldn't think that San Francisco would be a place to visit about Disney.  But The Walt Disney Family Museum, Lucasfilm, and the Silverado Winery (owned by former Disney CEO and Walt's son in law Ron Miller and his late wife, Walt's daughter, Diane Disney Miller) make a trip worthwhile.

My husband Rich, 19 year old son and I visited San Francisco and The Walt Disney Family Museum over the Summer of 2015.

WOW !

I encourage you to plan a trip to the Museum.  If you're a very ardent Disney fan:  Spend a day there!  A nice cafe is there so you can dine for lunch and resume touring.  There can be special changing displays and exhibits.  And the permanent one.  And special speakers come sometimes to recall working with Walt or Walt's influence on something.

GREAT educational place for children or school age students wanting to gather biographical information about Walt Disney, art, animation, operating a studio or theme park, his life and times.  If you have very little children, well, it's a museum and not a play place.  It's set up for the understanding of around middle school or junior high students and older.  Nothing of toddler or pre-school age there, no toys.  The more ardent a Disney fan you are, plan a long or all day visit.  A half day for us was too short !

Yes, there's a gift store, too !

You can "Like" the Friends of the Walt Disney Family Museum on Facebook.  Be forewarned they send a LOT of news feed items daily, so it can be hard to keep up if you lead a busy, distracting, life in Real World offline.

Plan a visit !  Uber works great in San Francisco so you can easily get there, spend all day, and return to a hotel.  It's safe there, and filled with great displays about Walt.
