As of December 23, 2012 and with some movies still actively playing, and opening, in theaters, here's how Disney-Buena Vista (BV) did in 2012 box office-wise.  Final figures won't be in until all movies stop playing in theaters in January or February 2013.

I'm going by how Box Office Mojo.com lists them.  They are in order, but #1, #7 etc refers to how BOM lists all movies for 2012.  Figures are also for US domestic box office.  And if Disney is who distributes it, then it's considered a Buena Vista movie.

Link to everything for 2012:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2012&p=.htm

Disney ones, including Marvel and Pixar, and these are the Top 5 for the year for Disney, which includes a huge flop "John Carter"

#1 Marvel's The Avengers $623, 357,910
#7 Brave $237,229,573
#12 Wreck-It Ralph $171,926,000 (still playing)
#22 Lincoln $116,781,000 (still playing)
#35 John Carter $73,078,100

#58 The Odd Life of Timothy Green $51,580,236
#64 Beauty & the Beast 3-D $47,617,067
#75 Finding Nemo 3-D $40,958,031
#85 Frankenweenie $34,415,786
#90 Chimpanzee $28,972,764

#100 The Secret World of Arrietty $19,202,743
#120 People Like Us $12,434,778
#137 Monsters, Inc. 3-D $6,525,00 (estimate, just opened Dec. 19, 2012

That Disney bought Marvel Entertainment and now those filsm are Disney's as well as revenue sharing still with Paramount as per contract, if it weren't for "Marvel's The Avengers" Disney's stellar box office would be with "Brave" (Pixar) and it's own animation studio for "Wreck-It Ralph", and Steven Spielberg distributing DreamWorks movies through Disney now with the widely acclaimed "Lincoln"..  Lots of money went into "John Carter" for very little return, however, and

It takes the first four movies on this list to offset the flop losses of the fifth movie on this list.

The other thing to notice is that re-releasing hit classic movies into 3-D isn't the money gimmick that was hoped for.  We now have newly opened Pixar movie "Monsters, Inc." in 3-D form in theaters.  But "Finding Nemo" and "Beauty & the Beast" both in 3-D flavor weren't the mega-hits that earlier Disney re-releases were.  Picking up pocket change from the couch cushions, maybe.

Here's a box office profits analysis from Box Office Mojo.com about "Monsters, Inc. 3-D" and alluding to "Finding Nemo 3-D" and "Beauty & The Beast 3-D" released earlier this year:

Quoting:

"Monsters, Inc. 3D was a bit of a disaster this weekend as well. The movie grossed just $5.04 million from 2,618 locations, which brings its five-day total to $6.53 million. That's less than half the debut of any of Disney's other 3D re-releases, and that five-day gross is less than what The Lion King 3D made in its opening day last year ($8.9 million).

It's a bit premature to declare that Disney's 3D re-releases are dead, but they are clearly on life support: families are catching on to the fact that it doesn't make sense to pay 3D ticket prices to see a movie that they can watch on DVD or Blu-ray in the comfort of their own home."

End of quoted material.

When Walt Disney himself re-released his classic animated films to movie theaters so new generations of children and families could enjoy them, that was in the days before home video or streaming video from online sources, YouTube, iTunes, or mobile computing devices that can store and playback movies such as computers, laptops, iPhones and iPads and other tablets and cable and satellite channels including several family-geared ones owned by Disney itself.

Doing re-releases and in reprocessed 3-D is kinda obviously a money grab.  There is also a glut of any kind of family movie product this time of year, and a very competitive environment.

I'd suggest Disney have a movie marathon on some of their channels themed to something, like Turner Classic Movies does.  Thanks to TiVo or DVR people can find these if Disney is clever about key word usage in program listings.
