Apple tablet could have 'imminent' Jan. 2010 debut - report

By Neil Hughes
Published: 07:25 AM EST

As Apple reportedly pushes to launch a subscription television service, the company is also rumored to unveil its long-awaited tablet device in January, a new report states.

Without naming a source, the Financial Times said that Apple's touchscreen device is "expected to launch imminently." The publication also reiterated much of what was said by The Wall Street Journal Monday: Apple has had discussions with Walt Disney Co. and CBS Corp. about offering subscriptions for TV shows through iTunes.

"Apple is preparing an announcement next month that many anticipate will be the official unveiling of its tablet, but the company has so far declined to confirm the existence of the device," the Financial Times reported. "Wall Street analysts expect mass production of an Apple tablet to begin as early as February."

It noted that magazine publishers Time Inc. and Condé Nast have created prototypes of digital editions of their magazines. The concepts shown were device-neutral and publishers intend to offer them on a variety of tablet devices expected to arrive in 2010.

A consortium of publishers have also agreed to open standards for a new digital storefront that will offer users media content on portable devices. The publishers intend to create a reading application that can render the "distinct look and feel" of specific publications. It would allow for devices to be viewed on a variety of hardware, including Apple's potential tablet.

In July, AppleInsider reported that Apple's rumored tablet device would arrive in early 2010. The 10-inch, 3G-enabled touchscreen device is said to have been crafted under the watchful eye of co-founder Steve Jobs.

Eddie's Comment:  I hope this thing has Wi-Fi.

So that means when reading a newspaper on Apple's tablet you'll get ink on your fingers?

Apple To Demo Tablet In January, Asks Developers To Get Apps Ready

Dan Frommer

Is the long-awaited Apple tablet just weeks away?

Apple is preparing to show off a new, larger mobile device with a higher resolution display in January -- probably a version of the Apple tablet we've been hearing about for months -- according to a plugged-in source in the mobile industry.

Apple has been telling some app makers to prepare apps for a demo next month, according to this source. "They've told select developers that as long as they build their apps to support full screen resolution -- rather than a fixed 320x480 -- their apps should run just fine," our source says.

The device won't go on sale in January, according to this source -- just the demo. This is presumably so Apple can give other app makers time to prepare their apps for larger-screen devices, a project that will range in complexity depending on the app. Previous reports suggest a tablet will be available in March.

One possibility -- increasingly likely, we think -- is that this is the first of several tablets Apple will announce over the coming months. According to mobile blog Boy Genius report, Apple is "100%" likely to announce a 7-inch tablet in January. The FT also suggests Apple could unveil a tablet next month. At four times the screen size of an iPhone, this is exactly the "iPod touch HD" we envisioned a year ago.

This could be in addition to a 10- to 11-inch tablet the company has supposedly been working on. No shocker. We assume tablets -- or at least multi-touch screen technology -- will eventually penetrate more Apple product lines, including portable Macs and maybe even desktop Macs.

A January demo may seem like curious timing: One reason Apple supposedly pulled out of the Macworld Expo is that January is not the best time to demo new hardware, falling right after the holiday shopping season and right after many employees would like to be on vacation.

But Steve Jobs has never been one to follow even his own rules, so we wouldn't rule anything out -- especially for a device that won't ship until later, anyway. And if Apple could start selling the tablet in the spring, it would presumably clear up some teams to deliver the new 2010 iPhone in its usual June/July release.

It would also be an awesome way to step on the Google Phone announcement, which is supposedly scheduled for January.

And another report:

Apple Asking App Developers to Prepare for Large Screen Demos Next Month?

Silicon Alley Insider reports that Apple has approached certain app developers to ask them to prepare for a demo scheduled for next month. Notably, Apple has requested that the developers prepare their applications to run in "full screen" mode rather than limiting display to the iPhone and iPod touch's 320 x 480 pixels.

The source notes that only the demo will occur in January, with a device launch scheduled for sometime in the future to allow other developers to modify their applications to support the new device and to allow Apple to generate excitement and anticipation ahead of the launch as it did with the original iPhone.

Apple tablet rumors have been flying fast and furious lately, with rumors of a February production ramp for a March or April release leading to reports of a possible January announcement. Exact specs of the tablet remain unknown, with long-standing rumors of a 10" display being joined in recent weeks with increasing claims of a 7" display, possibly indicating plans for multiple models of the new device.

Say hello to a new gadget from Apple next month!

Apple Special Media Event Scheduled for January 26th

From MacRumors.com:

The Financial Times reports that it has received word that Apple has scheduled a special media event for Tuesday, January 26th in San Francisco. The event will reportedly be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, site of the company's music-focused events held each fall in recent years.

The company has rented a stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for several days in late January, according to people familiar with the plans.

Apple is expected to use the venue to make a major product announcement on Tuesday, January 26th. Both YBCA and Apple declined to comment.

The topic of next month's rumored media event is currently unknown, although rumors have been flying today about Apple's tablet device plans, with a report claiming that Apple has asked several iPhone application developers to prepare their apps for demonstration on a larger screen device sometime next month.

Google will show its googlephone Jan. 5th. CES is Jan. 7th-10th. Apple on Jan. 26th might just blow them away!

I think it will be called MacBook touch and not a tablet or an iPad.

I wonder what 'full screen resolution' means. The iPhone resolution is 320 by 480 pixels. Perhaps Apple just wants developers to develop using that resolution and it will be fine on the new device.

I don't know, but I don't think so, Eddie. They might be giving the new specification to a few select developers only, as a way to keep the specs a secret on the new tablet device.

From MacRumors.com...

As we've known, Bilton reports that Apple has been working on a tablet on-and-off for many years but never felt to be good enough to go to market. Some of the previous technology had already been adapted for the iPhone launch. It seems, however, that Apple has finally gotten the tablet to the point to launch to the market, and according to a current senior employee at Apple, Steve Jobs is said to be "extremely happy with the new tablet."

Furthermore, another source told Bilton, "You will be very surprised how you interact with the new tablet." No other details are offered as to what this interaction might be. Apple, of course, holds many patents on multi-touch technology and has been expected to apply it to their upcoming tablet. Implementing more advanced gestures have been considered possible, though we're not sure if this would be considered a surprising interaction.
