Glen Keane is doing to make a movie in mix 2D/3D based on the classical Grimm's fairy tale "Rapunzel".

The movie will be a musical and music and songs will be written by Jeanine Tesori and Amir Khalifa.

In 2004 the movie was planned to be a Shrek-like spoof of classical fairy tale, but in October/November 2005 the movie was halted in order to "retool" it...

In the new version, Rapunzel will be a classical fairy tale...

Originally, the film's plot revolved around two 'romantically challenged', real-world teenagers who are transformed into Rapunzel and her Prince by a disgruntled witch who can no longer stand happy fairy-tale endings. However, since production was halted in 2005 for major retooling, Glen Keane has "promised" that the film will revert back to the fairy tale's "literary origins".

Do you know something about Rapunzel?

Do you know if the new plot will be a more classical fairy tale or it will remain the story about the modern day teens (named Claire and Vincent) who become Rapunzel and her Prince?

I hope Rapunzel will be a totally classical fairy tale with no modern day references... what do you think?

I know that Dean Wellins rejoint Glen Keane as co-director of this movie.

Lasseter in June 2006 said that Rapunzel has the most powerful beginning of Disney movie he'd seen.

Welcome to the Disney Echo, Ally -- and thanks for all the great photos from Rapunzel as well as the latest news about it. I haven't heard as much as you have about it, but I'm sure looking forward to seeing it.

From The Disney Blog:

Update: Floyd Norman has verified the rumor. However, Keane might have stepped down for personal reasons.

Rumor: Glen Keane removed from Rapunzel by Lasseter

    by John Frost

    October 9, 2008

CartoonBrew just posted a crazy rumor from inside Walt Disney Animation Studios. A CalArts professor claims that John Lasseter has removed Glen Keane from the director’s chair on Rapunzel. Apparently too many problems were cropping up with the work so far.

Lasseter had previous assigned a new writer to help Keane, so it’s not a stretch to think that additional action would be taken if progress wasn’t being made. Keane has worked for 7 years on this project, so the removal, if true, would doubtlessly be very hard for Keane to take.

A few pictures appearing online today of "Rapunzel", Disney Feature Animation film destined to open in November 24, 2010, Thanksgiving 2010.....

http://www.fusedfilm.com/2009....-online

and here, but if you Google News Advanced Search Rapunzel similar news and references will pop up :

http://www.chipandco.com/?p=2241

"The Princess and the Frog" is well liked currently playing by those who go see it.... and that's a problem.  Not that many people are going to see it.  It finished Christmas weekend #7 in the US after opening in wide-release December 11.

So...  Will "Rapunzel" simply go back to fairy tales, princesses, princes and some unique Disney twists and turns that we know from Disney from days of old....   And sell lots of tickets, the way Disney Feature Animation movies did in days of old?

View it while you can, this is a :06 (yes, six seconds) clip of "Rapunzel" that loops two and a half times.  It's very short.  On You Tube.  Disney might discover it's there and remove it at any time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRO6EHhPr5g&feature=player_embedded

There is a (feminist?) blog decrying "Rapunzel":  It returns Disney to having princesses that look like blonde Barbie dolls (their phrasing and opinion, not mine) and having damsels in distress and heroes who rescue them in an era of trying to create strong female role models, that Disney looks like it's returning to computer generated imagery rather than hand-drawn.  What they like is Rapunzel's long hair, that Alan Mencken is returning to composing Disney animated feature music and songs, and the "hero" is maybe not so "hero" after all, and it might be Rapunzel who's doing the rescuing.  It's from this blog I found the link to the clip on You Tube.

Here's the blog:

I think after several years of doing a variety of subject matter of feature animation, yes there is a LOT of merchandising, still, of Disney Princesses, but it also seems to be what still attracts a lot of families to Disney.  And to experiment with returning to what worked in the past is not a bad thing, necessarily.  We probably want it to be sweet, funny, have twists and turns that surprise their audiences that no, it's NOT more of the same no matter what you may think.  This is what worked for the live action-CGI "Enchanted" a few years ago, which royally and hilariously satirized Disney but it was sweet, and romantic, and traditional, and musical, and contemporary at the same time.  If "Enchanted" worked, so can "Rapunzel".  The songs in "Enchanted" were good, lyrical, memorable.  Let's hope that "Rapunzel" is the breakthrough that Disney Feature Animation is hoping for.

Voice of Rapunzel is Mandy Moore.

I am looking at the concept art for "Prince Flynn" and noticing something. If you kill the beard, restyle and color the hair, and you have a figure that looks remarkably like Prince Eric from "The Little Mermaid".
Big problem: How will they keep Rapunzels hair from getting caught in the float when they have the theme park parades?
