Think Big! Disney has officially announced that they've finalized an agreement with IMAX to release three of their upcoming tentpole 3D movies next year in IMAX. They are: Mars Needs Moms, an animated film produced by Robert Zemeckis starring Seth Green and Joan Cusack, out on March 11th; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth Pirates adventure starring Johnny Depp, out on May 20th; and finally Cars 2, the sequel to Pixar's animated film from 2006, out on June 24th next summer. You can add these to the 20 movies Warner Bros has coming in IMAX and more that we already Disney is releasing.

Disney's distribution president Chuck Viane states: "The incredible performance of our IMAX releases in '09 and '10 demonstrated that the combination of IMAX and Disney resonates with moviegoers worldwide. We're very much looking forward to continuing this great partnership through 2011 with an incredible slate of exciting films. The IMAX Experience adds another level of impact and excitement to a movie, and with these new films, made by some of the industry's most innovative filmmakers, audiences are in for are real treat." IMAX is still going strong and as long as people keep going, they'll keep the films coming. Excited?

What I remember used to be on the list of things necessary for Mars was that "Mars Needs Women".  Here's the Internet Movie Database listing for that 1967 TV movie :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060672/

Well I guess in 2011 Mars is a little unmanageable and the call went out from the front driver's seat to those in the back seat of the space rover, "...Don't make me come back there!"  So now "Mars Needs Moms" !

Where are the Dads?  On Pluto? ;)

OK, so I went to ol' reliable Internet Movie Database.com and found some very tantalizing info out....

Their webpages for "Mars Needs Moms" :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1305591/

IMDB.com Synopsis :   "A young boy named Milo gains a deeper appreciation for his mom after Martians come to Earth to take her away."

Before you think :sleepy:  Zzzzzzzzzzz look who wrote the book this movie is going to be based on, Berkeley Breathed !  Sound familiar?  Anyone remember the comic strips "Bloom County" "Outland" and "Opus" ?

IMDB.com listing for Berkeley Breathed is here, click all links to learn his bio and professional background, he was friends with sci-fi comedy author Douglas Adams ("Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy") :

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0106455/

And Robert Zemeckis is producing, past credits include "A Christmas Carol" for Disney, "Beowulf"  "The Polar Express"  "Back to the Future I II and III" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" among many others and in 2012 his rendition of the Beatles' "The Yellow Submarine" for Disney.  IMDB.com listing here:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000709/

I'm getting psyched !

Super Bowl ads, the Disney ones are "Thor" "Captain America" "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Mars Needs Moms", all movie ads.  Even though "Thor" and "Captain America" are listed as Paramount/Marvel Entertainment, Disney now owns Marvel.  "I'm going to WDW" ad airs in "Good Morning America" today.

If Mars needs moms, does this mean Venus needs dads?   :D

I don't know it is about the cable channels I watch, but I am seeing more TV commercials for "Battle: Los Angeles" than for Disney's "Mars Needs Moms".  The two movies have, somewhat, something in common:  Both are sci-fi fantasy flicks having to do with aliens.  One's family oriented.  One's downright terrifying looking, with a lot of fake cinema verite and fake news channel coverage of supposedly aliens coming to colonize EArth and is rated, get this, PG-13.  Similar movies, appealing to entirely different audiences, opening the same day.  Research well which one you choose for your family.

Scroll up for the promotional website for "Mars Needs Moms", and if you care Google around for "Battle: Los Angeles".

Why I'm bringing this up:

Disney the past year has had hits ("Alice in Wonderland" "Toy Story 3", both the two top grossing movies in the US in 2010) and a lot of misses.  Some of the misses have to do with how Disney promotes their movies (they hired someone who used to promote soft drinks) and scheduling (when to open a movie can be as important as promoting it).

We have here a dramatic weekend to open "Mars Needs Moms".  "Rango" from Nickelodeon Films and starring Johnny Depp in a CGI western, opens the Friday before.  But opening with similar and ominous themed "Battle: Los Angeles"????

Clearly Disney's is the family-oriented choice this weekend.  But what else is opening with or near "Mars Needs Moms" can impact its box office.
