walk through screen
"January 25, 2007 The new Walt Disney film Enchanted – released in November/December 2007 – has a promotional tour travelling to the main European cities of London, Paris, Madrid, Brussels and Munich in which the FogScreen walk-through screen is featured. One of the key features of the movie is an enchanted wishing well. The effects of which in the tour have been created by FogScreen walk-through screen (pictured). A Finnish invention, FogScreen walk-through screen uses ordinary water to generate a thin, dry fog upon which the image is projected, hence making it possible to walk through an image floating in mid-air without getting wet. Very Cool!

I'm guessing this is the same technique they used for the PotC revamp with Davey Jones?

My son loves watching Discovery Channel.  On Super Bowl Sunday afternoon he was more interested in DC than Super Bowl anything on TV.  DC had this superb show on about generally what are scientists working on today for the future.  And one of what they talked about was this same fog screen technology such as is used at the revamped Pirates of the Caribbean American theme park attractions.  Part of the new stuff that just got added this past summer 2006 was a fog screen that depicts Davy Jones (a character from the second Pirates of the Caribbean hit movies) .  Davy talks about trying to find ol' Captain Jack Sparrow and he seems larger than life and a bit intimidating...  But your boat sails right through him effortlessly, and you can see he is merely a movie projection on harmless mist.  If it's not the same thing it's darn near close to what you are referencing!

I'll have to visit the public library to find a newspaper from this past Sunday to find the title of the show, then to search over at Discovery Channel's listings to see if it will repeat.

In the meantime, two links at Discovery Channel about the technology:

I love it when you hit on the right combination of keywords in Google, and it leads you straight to the answer!

The good news is the show Rich, our son and I were watching Super Bowl Sunday afternoon will be repeated very soon on one of the networks Discovery owns.

The bad news is that perhaps unless you're on satellite TV or a very generous cable system you have to be able to receive The Science Channel.

So if you can receive Science Channel:

The name of the series is 2057, like the year 50 years from now.  The episode is "The City".  There's a mini-marathon of these shows, three in all, going on the morning of Monday, February 12.

Here's the program description:

Cars without drivers? Humanoid robots in every household? Cyber Hacking? Intelligent camera surveillance systems? Learn about today's scientific breakthroughs that will shape our networked cities of tomorrow.
tv ::  g
cc ::  cc

It does have the fog screen on it, and they describe how it's made and why it's made.  No Disney content to it, but it's pretty much similar to what is at Pirates of the Caribbean attractions at Disneyland and WDW newly installed in 2006.  So if you have a budding Imagineer in your family's midst or if you love knowing what makes Disney magic tick, you might enjoy this episode's segment about the fog screen.

Times (all Eastern):

FEB 11 2007
@ 09:00 PM

FEB 12 2007
@ 12:00 AM

FEB 12 2007
@ 04:00 AM

FEB 12 2007
@ 10:00 AM

Program your VCR, DVR or TiVo for an hour.  Be sure to allow a bit extra at the beginning and end so nothing is clipped off, find out in advance the channel assignment Science Channel has on your system.  And adapt the air times to your local time zone when programming your VCR, DVR or TiVo.

If you want to find this show again in Discovery or Science Channels listings, head to

http://www.discovery.com/

Choose either Discovery or Science Channels, and the real name of the show is "2057" and the particular episode is "The City", but check all their listings for the show series "2057".

:bowdown:  :clapping: Big thanks to Big Goofy Guy/Tom for finding the original information, and posting, which led to locating a special on TV/Cable/Satellite that describes it further and enhances all our appreciation of Disney "magic" and Imagineering.  Much obliged, Tom!   :clapping:  :bowdown:
