Fairy tale wedding marred by theft of photos

Newlyweds' families hope for return of stolen camera with 800 wedding photos on it.

By Michael Mello, Orange County Register

May 27, 2009

BUENA PARK It was a fantasy come true, a wedding with pixie dust and a reception with Disney-themed tables. Then a thief walked away with the photographer's camera—taking the nearly 800 pictures of the wedding and reception along with him.

The wedding "had a 'happily-ever-after' theme," said Diana Kahl, the groom's mother. Before the theft, "There were no glitches, it was a beautiful, awesome day. This was a big blow."

Now, while newlyweds Chris and Areli Kahl are honeymooning in Florida, their families hope the thief, if he doesn't give back the camera, will at least mail the memory card that contains the pictures to the hotel.

"They're absolutely devastated," Diana Kahl said. "We're hoping the thief would have a heart."

Santa Ana residents Chris and Areli Kahl met while working at the Star Tours attraction at Disneyland. Chris Kahl proposed to his future bride at Disneyland, his mother said.

The wedding ceremony and reception were held Saturday at the Holiday Inn Buena Park Hotel on Beach Boulevard. At mid-afternoon, the photographer called the wedding party into the hotel lobby for some final shots together.

At one point, the photographer set the camera down, Kahl said, just for a moment. In that moment, the camera got swiped.

On Monday, family members saw the whole thing on the hotel's security video, Diana Kahl said. They did not recognize the man, who she said was dressed appropriately for a wedding.

The thief, she said, stood nearby while the photographer worked.

"He stood not six feet away from us," Kahl said. "He got his opportunity, and he took it."

The video, she added, showed "He walked over to the table, took the camera from the table, put it under his jacket and walked away. It's obvious this isn't the first time he's done this.
