Good thing Pixar makes such High quality movies because I'm never all that excited with their advertisements. |
I distinctly remember not being impressed with the premise of "Finding Nemo". Then I went to see it and was blown away.
I distinctly remember not being impressed with the premise of "Wall-E" or it's first trailers. Then I saw "Wall-E" and fell in love with it! It's my absolute favorite of the contemporary Pixar movies, blows away ( IMHO ) "Lion King" "Little Mermaid" "Beauty and the Beast", pretty much is better, IMHO than "Finding Nemo" and "Nemo" was the epitome of sublime and superb and hard to top. And I would actively letter-write to see to it "Wall-E" got more than a "Best Animated Feature" Oscar. And it's the first time I really wanted, and acted on, flying clear across the US to see it at one of the most optimum movie theatre screening and aural conditions I could, and ironically right across the street from where the Oscars are handed out, in Hollywood itself. So far, "Wall-E" is Pixar's masterpiece. But I couldn't tell that from the first trailers, teasers, or even from John Lasseter's own mouth at the 2007 Disney Shareholder Meeting held in New Orleans, and he spoke there about the movies in the pipeline, and "Wall-E" was one of them. Eh, OK, sounds OK, not really reaching me in 2007... In 2008, I flew across the US to see it for the third time!
So...
I see "Up's" teaser, and I go, "Well... uh.... Hmmmm... uh... Ohhhhhhhkayyyyyyyyy...."
Then I remember what I thought about "Finding Nemo" and "Wall-E" at first, based only on their initial trailers and teasers.
I forget who sang the song, it's a secular pop song, "You gotta have faith..."
You gotta have faith in Pixar. They are making, they say, the movies they themselves would want to see. "Wall-E" is evidence they have reached "art film" status that is still a mass market film experience. If that's the sort of film they want to see, and it's that good, I want to see what else Pixar comes up with! They push the envelope with story and technology, and the folks there have so much heart, I am convinced that Walt Disney himself is looking in on them from the clouds where Walt's spirit has gone to rest and Walt's allowed to send them good ideas to work on.
I have faith in Pixar. I am along for their ride. I may not understand their premises or techniques of promoting their stories, but I am with them, solidly. Believing.
