March 11, 2009 Update:
This just in: Disney has moved the premEAR date of "The Princess and the Frog" earlier, so that it won't compete with "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel." Disney's animated feature set in New Orleans will have exclusive early showings in New York City and Los Angeles starting on November 25, 2009 before it opens all around the U.S. on December 11th, moved up from December 25th. There are no details yet about how this will affect the film's world premEAR and if that will take place in New Orleans or not. The early runs in NYC and L.A. are hoped to build favorable word of mouth for feature during the Thanksgiving holiday period.

For more details about this, jump to here.

November 26, 2008 Update:
I've just seen a video of Randy Newman's complete performance of "Down in New Orleans" (the song which opens Disney's The Princess and the Frog" animated feature) and have posted the complete lyrics of it. Skip to this page of this topic to see it!

August 8, 2008 Update:
A new teaser trailer for Disney's The Princess and the Frog is now on Disney Pictures website here: disney.go.com/disneypictures/princessandthefrog-- as well as here on Disney Echo TV.

You can hear the princess's voice, see the frog she doesn't want to kiss on the lips, hear Dr. John singing/performing the opening number (some of it) and hear veteran Disney voice artist Jim Cummings as the voice of the cajun lightning bug. Looks and sounds great to me! The song is the same one I posted on Disney Echo TV when Randy Newman performed it at this year's Jazz Fest.
 :clapping:

I've also created a music video using Randy Newman's performance of "Down in New Orleans" with stills from The Princess and the Frog, which you can see here on Disney Echo TV.

May 11, 2007 Update: The title of the animated feature has just changed from "The Frog Princess" to "The Princess and the Frog"

Official Disney Press Release

Disney's 2009 Animated Release "The Frog Princess" Taps Into Studio's Rich Fairy Tale Legacy

Oscar-Winner Randy Newman Teams Up With Acclaimed Veteran Directors Musker & Clements

March 8, 2007

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The Walt Disney Studios will continue its fairy tale legacy in animation by taking moviegoers on an all-new "once upon a time" musical adventure with its 2009 release of "The Frog Princess," it was announced today by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, and John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. A musical set in the legendary birthplace of jazz – New Orleans -- "The Frog Princess" will introduce the newest Disney princess, Maddy, a young African-American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the fabled French Quarter. From the heart of Louisiana's mystical bayous and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn.

Maddy, Disney's first African-American princess

"The Frog Princess" is based on an original story written by Disney's acclaimed filmmaking duo John Musker & Ron Clements ("The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," "Hercules"), who will also direct. Oscar®-winning songwriter/composer and New Orleans native Randy Newman ("Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "Cars") will write songs and the score for this project. Peter Del Vecho, a 12-year Disney animation veteran, will produce.

Commenting on the announcement from The Walt Disney Company's 2007 Annual Meeting of shareholders, Cook said, "We're pleased to be here in the heart of New Orleans to announce 'The Frog Princess,' a great story with all the ingredients that go into making an extraordinary motion picture experience. Like many of Disney's most popular fairy tales, it has elements of magic, fantasy, adventure, heart, humor, and music. The film's New Orleans setting and strong princess character give the film lots of excitement and texture. We're also thrilled to have John Musker, Ron Clements and Randy Newman lending their talents and creative energies to this project. John and Ron helped to usher in Disney's second golden age of animation nearly two decades ago with 'The Little Mermaid,' and are on track to create the Studio's next great fairy tale adventure."

John Lasseter added, "Aside from being longtime friends and colleagues, John and Ron are two of the most influential and imaginative filmmakers in the animation medium, and I am so excited to be working with them in bringing their creative vision for 'The Frog Princess' to the big screen. They've come up with an original story that is deeply rooted in the fairy tale tradition, and it's filled with great humor, emotion, and musical moments. Randy Newman brings fun and excitement to every project, and I couldn't think of a better choice to deliver some wonderful New Orleans style music."

John Musker & Ron Clements have directed and produced five feature films for Disney including "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin." Additionally they received story and/or screenplay credits as well. Musker began his career at Disney in 1977, after studying character animation at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). He started as an assistant animator and went on to animate on "The Fox and the Hound." Clements started at Disney in the Talent Development Program, and went on to serve a two-year apprenticeship under Disney animation legend, Frank Thomas. He moved from in-betweener to assistant to animator/storyman with credits on such films as "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too," "The Rescuers," "Pete's Dragon," "The Fox and the Hound," and "The Black Cauldron."

Randy Newman is a 17-time Oscar® nominee and winner (in 2002) for his song, "If I Didn't Have You," from the Disney/Pixar film, "Monsters, Inc." Among his many achievements, he has contributed songs and musical scores for such other Pixar animated features as "Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "Cars." Newman's impressive list of film credits also includes scores for "Ragtime," "The Natural," "Parenthood," "Awakenings," and "Pleasantville." He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002, and his other career milestones include three Grammy Awards, an Emmy, the first Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement, and an Annie Award.

Peter Del Vecho began his association with Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1995, following a 15-year stint working as a stage manager, production manager and associate producer in the world of live theater. From 1986-95, he worked for the renowned Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, leaving there as associate producer. At Disney, Del Vecho was the production manager on "Hercules" and associate producer on "Chicken Little," among other projects. A native of Boston, he received a degree in Theatre Arts from Boston University.

Maddy, the animated heroine in "The Frog Princess," will also join The Walt Disney Company's venerable court of beloved Disney princesses as they continue to enjoy the royal treatment at Disney's theme parks, consumer products, publishing, Internet and other businesses worldwide.

We've discussed the early word about Disney's return to traditional animation here in this other Disney Echo topic previously. Please go there for the older information, then return here for more discussion about it as well as "The Frog Princess."

I want to know two things about Maddy:

1)  What does our newest (and first) Princess (of color) look like?  Come on, guys, give up the goods.
2)  Will Maddy be in Kingdom Hearts III?

Try clicking on the links posted above to see "Maddy" the newest Disney Princess, this one of African-American heritage.  Since the movie is coming out in two years, anything is possible about new Disney or Disney-Pixar characters being in video games, nothing mentioned about that, it's a little early.

Yeah, more info is within a lot of the coverage of the Annual Meeting of Shareholders of Disney in a different thread.  The issue is that unless you were credentialed press you were not allowed to bring any type of camera or recording device into the meeting hall.  Rich took our camera back to the car.   So the photos you see above in the links are "all" we're to see.  They showed much more!  But perhaps the press was limited in what they could photograph as well.  It's all that proprietary "intellectual property" copyright law and self-preservation stuff, and I can see Disney's point that they want to let out a "teaser" but not the entire cat out of the bag, lest their competitors attempt to bash Disney more than they are trying to do now.

And it's a Stockholders' Meeting, and not a comic-con.  There's a couple of annual comic or sci-fi fan events, one's annually in San Diego, where Disney in fact does go and they end up showing a lot of great previews of things.  When those events occur you can usually find fan buzz about it online.  We've love to get the buzz, too, 'cause we're excited at Disney Echo about the return of hand-drawn animation over at Disney.  And as you know the films translate into things going on in the parks, too, so theme park fans can start looking forward to some things arising out of "The Frog Princess".

Back to the subject:

Some of the ramifications:  Product lines (African-American Maddy Disney Princess dolls and clothes, like Barbie) and toys and books, CDs, a theme park walk around to pose with and meet and get autographs from, perhaps a Character Breakfast at Animal Kingdom Lodge's Boma buffet and in New Orleans Square at Disneyland some tie-ins.  Speculation all of this.  But look down the road and think about it. ;)

One of the characters in this movie, I swear, is drawn to look like Clark Gable's Rhett Butler character in "Gone with the Wind".  They have the stereotypical card game and riverboat gambling going on.  Talking alligators in the swamp, they had live action video of a swamp tour in which the operator feeds an alligator from the boat and it's practically leaping out of the water to get it's meal.

To know they've done their homework:  Disney must have been in New Orleans during Carnival (Mardi Gras season) sometime.  They understand who Rex is.  Rex is King of Carnival, the reigning monarch, and he is generally white, hugely wealthy, well-connected in business and social circles, and "old line/Blue Blood" type "old money" established family going back many generations.  Lest anyone get a wrong impression, these folks serve on a lot of charitable causes and charity boards of directors, and Rex as a parading krewe has done a lot of community outreach initiatives for schools (such as aiding in the rebuilding and restaffing of some of the New Orleans public schools after Katrina).  But it's also true there has been a racial and economic divide in the city for many many years, and still it's also true there are certain events where no matter what color or economic background you are from there are a couple of events or ocassions in which everyone comes together as one and there are no divides, one of those is Carnival/Mardi Gras.  Rex is chosen from among others in the organization, someone who not only the members like and respect but who represents a lifetime of community service and admiration for the city of New Orleans.  They choose a Queen from among the debutante coterie of college juniors-seniors, beautiful, family lines on both sides of her family have Carnival royalty lineage (just like real royalty), she's accomplished and an honor roll student, into a lot of community causes....  And it's a social connectedness thing.  There is a wide disparity of ages between Rex King of Carnival and his Queen, decades wide.  KNowing who they are each year is supposed to be secretive 'til Mardi Gras itself.

That the Disney montage of concept art, while Randy Newman and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band played a song from the movie, featured a glimpse of just the word "Rex" indicates a lot of the plot, maybe.

'Cause if Maddy is destined to be a "Disney Princess" the only royalty going on down here in New Orleans is Carnival krewe royalty, the parading and other krewes (organizations, misspelling deliberately the word "crew") all have kings, queens, members of the court, pages for people's children to be in the court, and they all dress like royalty with fancy clothes and gowns, tiaras, mantles, long flowing trains, thrones, people attending Carnival balls have to formally bow to these people, etc.  And there are some African-American Krewes, too, the most famous of which is Zulu (Louis Armstrong was a Zulu King) and the one that has a very elaborate debutante Carnival ball where they are all dressed to the hilt in fancy royal clothes is the Young Men's Illinois Club.  And I bet "Maddy" might be in either Zulu or Young Men's Illinois Club.  Or maybe NOMTOC (New Orleans Most Talked of Club) on the West Bank.  But I think she's in Zulu or Young Men's Illinois Club.
