See here for details on this morning's deadly crash of two Walt Disney World monorails which killed 21-year-old monorail driver/cast member Austin Wuennenberg.

In light of this accident, do you want to ride in the front of Disney monorails?

I voted "No, I'd rather not ride in the front of Disney monorails." and here's why:

I've done that many times already, often with my family, and space is limited in the front so I'll let others have the opportunity now. My reason is not because I'm worried about safety in riding up there. Also, often I've had to wait for the next monorail when I've wanted to ride up front... Sitting in another part of the monorail often means you'll get to your destination faster.

We got to ride in the front once and I thought it was fun, but after today, I think we'll stay in the back. The boys like riding in the back better anyway.

These are kinda meaningless stats but in the 38 year history of monorails at WDW there is only one fatality, the one early this morning.  Disneyland has been open since 1955 and since then there is only one fatality in nearly 54 years.  

News stories I've quoted in the news topic say however there have been accidents and injuries at both parks involving monorails.  

So you can say, in a way, there is an element of risk in everything on this earth.  And you can say the odds are one fatality each park, 1/38 and 1/54 over the course of years, high seasons,  peak seasons, ups and downs are such the risk is minimal and rare of being hurt or injured.

You probably run more risk from careless fellow park guests who don't listen to or follow safety spiels and might allow themselves to get into some sort of trouble which you happen to be close to be part of or witness.

You can't stay home, either, all cocooned up.

My thing about riding in the front of a monorail is less for safety concerns after hearing the news of this fatal crash, and more about "been there, done that, give someone else a chance".  And to do it now (we're Disneyland-bound the end of this month, in California) is less scared, and a little more like "haunted".  I don't want that kind of feeling on this upcoming trip.  Others are welcome to sit up there though, and enjoy.   :pixiedust:

I voted "Not sure."  Give it a little time, at least speaking for myself.  I am not opposed to it based soley on the accident, merely I'd do it sometime, but give others a chance to enjoy it so I'll step aside for them to have at it and enjoy.

I voted that I would still ride in front. We did it years ago when I was younger and it was such an experience. My 6 yr old wants to ride in the front so bad. We didn't get the chance on our 2008 trip and if they are still doing the rides, we'll try again on our 2010 trip.

I trust Disney. In 38 YEARS to have only had 1 "accident"...I mean, no accidents would be better but that's quite a record. Can't say that about most airlines even

They've had several accidents in 38 years at WDW and 54 years at Disneyland.  It's one fatality in 38 or 54 years, respectively.  Read the Topic to see a posting of the lists.

I voted 'No', because in the past when I was a CP, I have already ridden in the front without fear...but now with what happened, I'm not going to be doing that again...I'm much more comfortable in the middle of the monorail

I thought this would happen, at least for a while... WDW no longer allows Guests to ride in the pilot cabin of monorails. Heard it here: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/orl-bk-....ack=rss
Also, both NTSB and OSHA are now investigating.

You bet I will ride up front again. I LOVE it. I have always been a huge train fan, and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE monorails...I have since my first trip to WDW in 1975. Monorails are like what Mickey is  to WDW in my book.

I do understand what Rich and Carol are saying about letting others get a ride up front though. BUT......As much as I hate to say it......OK.....I am selfish on this one. I have to get a ride up front each trip. So there it is....I admitted it.. :coolgrin:
