Tragedy at WDW in the early morning hours following Independence Day, as I post this only WESH-TV has the story, three other Orlando TV stations and the Orlando Sentinel do not; Fox News Channel just had something on.  This will change as news organizations become aware of it and develop the story and distribute it further.  Terrible tragedy for the Cast Member who died in the accident, keep the family in thoughts and prayers.  This will develop further, so what's quote below are sketchy basic facts.

According to the Reedy Creek Fire Department, the accident happened about 2 a.m. at the ticket and transportation area, where people catch the monorail to get to the Magic Kingdom from the parking lot. The driver of the other train was taken to the hospital as well.

About five or six guests were on the monorail, but they are not seriously injured.

It is not known how the two trains crashed. The Orange County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

MiceAge's Kevin Yee reports that WESH-TV reports (not yet on their website BTW, but might be soon) it was monorails pink and purple, pink stationery, purple moving.  Yee speculates (speculation unconfirmed mode ON) from his experiences going frequently to WDW he's see purple have mechanical problems to the point passengers have to be taken off, the purple monorail towed. (Speculation unconfirmed mode OFF).

It was Epcot-bound monorail track at Ticket and Transportation Center near Magic Kingdom... Didn't happen _at_ Epcot, to clarify what URL link says Central Florida News 13 link says.

Monorail service to resume at 9 am Eastern, but without either affected trains (both removed from service for purposes of investigation as well as the crashed monorail is damaged at front end causing the death of the driver).

Breaking News: Deadly Disney World Monorail Crash

POSTED: Sunday, July 5, 2009

At 2am Sunday morning, Reedy Creek Emergency Services responded to a call at the Ticket and Transportation Center at the Magic Kingdom. Two monorails collided. 8 people were evaluated total following the crash. One monorail driver was killed. The other driver is fine physically. There were 5 to 6 guests on the monorail at the time of the crash. Disney World Public Relations tells Local 6 that they will release more information later this morning. They are on scene right now gathering information about the incident.

A witness tells Local 6 that he heard a huge crashing noise when the monorails collided. He was able to get pictures and video of frazzled guests walking off the train.

Another report indicates that a moving pink train hit a stationary purple train.

Local 6 has obtained dramatic pictures from the scene of the crash. Stay with Local 6 for more information about this crash.

End of quoted story.  No photos or video posted yet, but it's probably being edited.

I originally had this in the Disney News Forum, and asked Site Administrator Rich Koster (my husband) to move this and also put relevant links in a general WDW Forum as well as here in the Disney Trains and Monorails Forum.  So that is why some similar topics of this story are locked and why you're redirected here.  A lot of Disney topics overlap in what they are about, so we wanted the info where people could most logically think to find it, also having a single topic where you can discuss, rather than multiple places to discuss it.

Monorail trains collide at Walt Disney World; 1 dead

By Sara K. Clarke
Sentinel Staff Writer
8:40 AM EDT, July 5, 2009

Two Walt Disney World monorail trains collided early Sunday morning, killing the operator of one of the trains.

Walt Disney World spokesman Mike Griffin said the crash happened at about 2 a.m. Sunday, on one of the monorail's last runs of the day. A cast member who was piloting one of the monorails died at the scene of the accident, while another monorail driver was taken to the hospital. The second driver's injuries were not serious, Griffin said.

Anyone with information about the incident or snapped photos can e-mail the Orlando Sentinel here.

The trains were transporting guests leaving Epcot Center. Six park guests were on the train during the crash, but were not injured, Griffin said.

The wreck is the first fatal accident in the Walt Disney World monorail system's almost 38-year history, according to CFNews13.com. Walt Disney World officials said they are working with law enforcement officials to find out what happened.

"Our heart goes out to the cast member and the family," Griffin said.

Epcot is scheduled to open on time at 9 a.m. today, but the monorail to the park will not be in service, according to a Walt Disney World spokewoman.

Walt Disney World released the following statement regarding the incident:

"Today, we mourn the loss of our fellow cast member. Our hearts go out to his family and to those who have lost a friend and co-worker. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our top priority. The monorail is out of service and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to determine what happened and the approximate next steps." -- Mike Griffin, Walt Disney World Vice President of Public Affairs

Accident happened _on the Epcot-bound monorail track_ at Ticket & Transportation  Center near Magic Kingdom.  Likely track is closed due to accident investigation and the badly damaged monorail might still be there, investigators need to examine the trains systems as well as series of sensors along that particular track which should have triggered the train or it's operator to slow down and stop due to presence of monorail still in station, etc.

Could it be a technical glitch, a system failure, operator error, mechanical failure, lack of maintainance?  Investigators hoping to find out.  News articles indicate a further press release will come once more is known.

If you know anyone vacationing now at WDW, get word to them in case they are not following news stories on local TV in their hotels.  People rely on mass transit of the monorail to get to Epcot.  There will be more reliance on bus system now 'til Epcot-bound monorail track is cleared by investigators and safety inspectors for use and a replacement monorail train installed. Some folks take a vacation break away from the news when they go to Disney, so getting word to them will be a nice thing to clue them in so they can make alternate transportation plans by bus 'til the monorail track is cleared for use later.

1 Dead In Disney World Monorail Crash
Accident Happened At Magic Kingdom Ticket Center
POSTED: 7:10 am EDT July 5, 2009
UPDATED: 9:41 am EDT July 5, 2009
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The operator of a monorail at Walt Disney World died Sunday morning when two monorails crashed.

According to the Reedy Creek Fire Department, the accident happened about 2 a.m. on a train leaving the Epcot ticket and transportation area, where people catch the monorail to the Magic Kingdom and several Disney hotels. The driver of the other train was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

About five or six guests were on the monorail at the time of the accident, but they were not injured.

It is not known how the two trains crashed on one of the last runs of the night. Epcot closed at 10 p.m. on Saturday, but the Magic Kingdom was open until 1 a.m., according to the Disney World Web site.

"We mourn the loss of our fellow cast member," Mike Griffin, Disney World's vice president of public affairs, said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to his family and those who have lost a friend and coworker."

Griffin said the monorail is closed at this time and that Disney World is working closely "with law enforcement to determine what happened." The Orange County Sheriff's Office also released a brief statement saying it is investigating.

Epcot is open as usual today.

The monorail began operations in 1971. Each monorail can carry more than 350 people between the parking lot, hotels, the Magic Kingdom and Epcot.

Check back for details.

Comment in some Facebook discussion about the crash, what do you think, person wonders if this will be the end of park guests riding as a privilege treat in the monorail driver's cab compartment, as an OSHA regulation.  What do you think?  Also sensors are supposed to alert drivers of monorails when other monorails are slow or not moving in front of them, and slow or stop the moving monorail, or when monorails haven't departed station yet.  What happened?

Facebook has restrictions of which I wasn't aware of limitations on posting to your own web page there, called The Wall", and their automation thinks I was posting too much, links to news media websites too much, or too often within a time frame.  The nature of their "warning" to me was unclear.  So the Facebook site has temporarily blocked me from posting anything to anyone over there anymore, for an undisclosed period of time (could be hours, or days).

Downside of Facebook as a news distribution entity, eh?  And live and learn mode for me, I honestly didn't know.

So as long as you stay on topic about this accident, you can post away here on Disney Echo in this topic and forum and say anything as long as "anything" is reasonably civil language and reasonably informed posting as Mickey Mouse would and less like Donald Duck when Donald's throwing a tantrum. ;)  One of the upsides to our site. ;)

Everything I put on Facebook, though, is duplicated here on Disney Echo.  So scroll up for that content.

I first heard from Fox News Channel, and among local Orlando news media the first to have it was WESH-TV online, not even Orlando Sentinel had it first.  Based on WESH I posted to Facebook list of friends, here on Disney Echo, and to friends via E-mail.  Rich also sent a Disney Echo member-list wide distribution of the news.

It's hard to judge which of Disney theme parks many attractions have the best and highest level of affection attached to them.  But the monorails at the parks are definitely in a Top 10 or Top 25 list, I'd bet.  It seems unthinkable a crash could happen.

I'm reading these monorail systems are pretty sophisticated.  Any of us who deal with computers, the sensors in your car, etc., know that glitches just happen, despite safeguards and redundencies in systems.  "The impossible" can happen sooner or later, the statistical chance is always there however small.

The mercy in this tragedy is that it happened when all the parks were closed, only a few guests on board in the passenger section when it happened and none of them hurt, and the driver of the other monorail with minor injuries if any.  Also that it happened in the middle of the night so that crowds would not have seen it or been on it in the heavily peak season crowds of this holiday weekend.  People are fond of trying to get the special privilege, luck of the draw in availability (you just had to ask and that it happened to be open and available and not already taken) to ride up there with the driver.  Another mercy is that no one else but the drivers involved were in the front cabs when this happened.  Another good thing is that it causes a full investigation and safety inspection to take place, and the results can mean better equipment, maintainance, safety training procedures coming if it's deemed necessary.

But the heart of concern is that someone who worked for Disney perished as the result of this accident.  It is heartrending for the staffer's family and friends and co-workers.

This is horrible. I'm so sad about the death of the monorail driver.

I also wonder if this will this end the perk for all of Guests being allowed to ride in the very front of the monorails with the driver.
