We're going back to Disneyland!  :wwww:

We'll be there Wed., July 29 through Monday, Aug. 3 -- 6 days/5 nights.

We're flying Southwest Airlines from New Orleans to the Orange County (John Wayne) airport, arriving around lunchtime. When we fly home it will also be on Southwest Airlines.

I got a great lower-than-normal rate at the Candy Cane Inn, located in the same block as the Disneyland/DCA theme parks, withing walking distance (but they also have their own, exclusive shuttle bus if our feet get tired).
:clapping:

When we get there we'll be purchasing the "pay for 3/get 2 free" parkhopper tickets for Disneyland and DCA.

It will be so good to be back there in July!

The heartache and heart tugs for the Disneyland park were going on, and we wanted to see some new attractions there since our Easter 2008 and late July-early August 2008 trips:  Castle Walk-Through, Pixie Hollow, Dumbo flying over the Castle at fireworks time, and the renovations going on at California Adventure.

We were really hugely "taken" by Disneyland a year ago!

We haven't been to WDW since Easter 2005, since before Hurricane Katrina.  For me, I don't know what it is, but I've just got a "been there, done that" about having been to WDW so very many times, and the renovated restored Disneyland seems new, fresh, and with the current Imagineering and CEO (John Lasseter and Robert Iger) it seems like they are placing the spotlight to restore Disneyland to be the crown jewel of the Disney theme parks.  The quality showed last year!  We were amazed that, in many many ways, DL is actually better than WDW.

The memories, and photos in my iPhone, of our trips last year were such they got me through hurricane evacuation for hurricane Ike in 2008 and the rigors of my husband's workplace having been sold, his supervisor "leaving" under new owner and management (quit/fire ? ) while we were on the second trip, and a year of challenges with other little life matters going on.  I wanted to not only relive the trips by going again, but regain that kind of "fuel" to get through our son's final year at his school and whatever a changing Federal and state economy will throw at us...  and another hurricane season.

My concerns about going at all:  The economy.  Hoping husband's job is very stable in this economy.  I'm having major surgery May 28, and even though the doctor says specifically I should be good to go by vacation time, I still want to feel and be OK and hope no complications happen.

The culture of travelling to WDW "stay at Disney, on-site" was one of my "blocks" to making this trip happen.  Last year we stayed on-site at Disneyland Hotel and Grand Californian Hotel, and loved it.  This year to make things more affordable in this economy husband strongly felt we should stay off-site at a Good Neighbor hotel, and for a past Disneyana Convention we stayed at the Candy Cane Inn and liked it a lot... Back in 1993 or 1995!  Despite it's stellar user reviews online, it still was "off-site".  Stay at Disney!  Magical!  Extra expense worth it to stay in the magic!  Right?  Get a Premium Annual Pass and that will bring it all to an affordability range that for the few extra bucks it would be more worth it to stay again at Disneyland Hotel....  Right?

Husband researched and number crunched.  If main criteria and importance in this particular trip is "affordability in this economy", then husband called Disneyland reservations and researched Annual Pass discounts and blackout dates, costs, varying arrival-departure dates, and the cost of staying at the Candy Cane.  With park tickets plus accomodations plus some negotiations Rich entered into with the manager of the Candy Cane Inn, it was a savings of about $456 which can be reallocated to meals.  Not worth it financially for any of us to have a Premium Annual Pass, not saving that much when you use it on dining vs. the cost of that kind of park ticket even if only one of us had the PAP and paid for meals using it.

There's no right, no wrong, in planning a Disney vacation, it's a matter of being true to yourselves in your travel party and what you want most out of your trip.  If "bang for the buck" and "value in this economy" are the priorities, then that means being flexible and accepting that having the "feel good" of the PAP and the "magic" of staying at DL Hotel comes at a tangible dollar cost.

Disney's discounts this year are pretty sweet.  Come for three and get two more for free, that shaves a lot cost off the trip, cost that can be reallocated to other trip expenses.  Rich compared taking that the "stay 3 get 2 free" at Dl Hotel and what the Candy Cane's rates are, and it's sweeter to stay at the Candy Cane this time around.  We're getting a park tickets deal, a little $10 off for each of us = $30 savings, by buying them at the Candy Cane when we arrive.  Candy Cane, judging by it's online photos and guest reviews on Disney and other travel rating websites, is comparable to a very nice Hampton Inn.  They have it's own park shuttle, to/from Disneyland, no other hotels or routes or stops.  Disney works with the hotels designated as "Good Neighbor" hotels so that Disney standards apply to the quality of the room and accomodations experience, problems get resolved for guests if there are problems, clean "nice" "pleasant" accomodations.  They consistently adhere to Disney's standards, the place looks great, people post all goes well, we're saving money, saving steps walking, and free Wi-Fi in the rooms....  And as much as I'd genuinely long to stay at the DL Hotel or Grand Californian again, I gotta go with "practicality" this trip.

But if we ever win Powerball.... DL Hotel and/or Grand Californian, here I come to renew acquaintance!

I wonder, next, if there will be a special show at the El Capitan Theater Disney Studios owns in Hollywood, because I fell in love with it and the ice cream shop Disney owns next door, and I wouldn't turn down a trip there at all!  (Google it, worth your time if you go to DL or Southern California.)

I double-checked the Disneyland Resort's website price for buying tickets online before we go and they are actually a bit cheaper that way: $179 per person for 5 days each instead of the $184 per person the Candy Cane Inn quoted... so I'll buy them online instead.

I'm going to add things here as I think of them which we didn't get around to doing at the Disneyland Resort last year (because of didn't take the time or the attraction was being refurbished/wasn't open yet) and should check out this year.

Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough
it's a small world
Pixie Hollow
Gadget's Go-Coaster
Astro Orbiter
See more of the Innoventions house
the new Disneyland parade
the new Disneyland fireworks
the new Fantasmic
Billy Hill and the Hillbillies in the Golden Horseshoe, and eat there
Chip 'n Dale Critter Breakfast at Storytellers Cafe
Bountiful Valley Farm
DCA Wharf area
It's Tough To Be A Bug
walk through a bug's land but probably not ride anything there
Redwood Creek Challenge Trail Featuring "The Magic of Brother Bear" show
Pixar Play Parade
the new Games of the Boardwalk
Mickey's Fun Wheel
maybe Mulholland Madness before it gets changed into Goofy's Flying School
The Bakery Tour
Mission Tortilla Factory
Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar
Muppet*Vision 3D
Animation Academy and Sorcerer's Workshop in DCA's Animation attraction

...and if we drive into Los Angeles, Michael would like to see the outside of the Disney headquarters/studios, perhaps the Walt Disney Concert Hall, etc.

I've downloaded the Disneyland e-tickets, which are like voucher multi-day passport tickets. No need to go to Guest Services, the instructions say to simply take the print-outs (which each have unique bar codes) to any entry turnstyle, the CM will scan them, then hand you a replacement permanent passport card to use the next times instead.

In comparing costs from our trip July 28-August 2, 2008 to what we've booked so far (airline tickets, hotel, park tickets) we can see some savings!

Not staying at the Disneyland Hotel this time around but staying at the Candy Cane Inn is a savings of $382.  Last year we used a Premium Annual Pass discount to offset the cost of the DL Hotel, but still the dif between then and now is rather substantial.

Buying airline tickets earlier (last year bought within 3 weeks of departure, this year 2.5 months in advance of departure) is probably why they are cheaper plus fuel a year ago for cars was $4+ a gallon and this year is half that so surely airline fuel is cheaper too, saving $383.

I had a year long Premium Annual Pass a year ago from the Easter 2008, so didn't need park tickets for me, but for Rich and son last year vs. this year (I guess Disney offering online a sweeter deal) we're either saving $30 over last year's "buy early special" or $110 buying online this year vs. the stated price for them last year.

That's around $875 in savings between a year ago and now.

I haven't added up the figures for the Easter 2008 trip we took to Disneyland yet.  That trip was 'way more spendy since we stayed a few nights at the DL Hotel and a couple of nights at the Grand Californian, ate at swanky Napa Rose there, and did some expenditures then that we didn't do the second trip.

Book early.  If you visit Disney (WDW or DL) often keep a record of your expenses, I do in Quicken, it can help you know what to expect in cost figuring for a future trip.  Do not be afraid of a little price negotiation at the hotel you'd like to stay at.  It might knock a few bucks of the rate.  Of course Disney is offering "deals" right now, getting in to the theme park free on your birthday and the stay 3 get 2 or 3 for free (depending on which park WDW or DL), some dining plans...  Number crunch this stuff, see what pays for itself or where the "deals" are for you.  Mileages vary, tastes vary, budgets vary, desires for amenities vary, where you want to skimp vs. where you're willing to splurge will vary...  But in the hunt you can find the Disney vacation that the Pixie Dust in the air will inspire you to get and enjoy!

Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln won't reopen 'til Dec. 17, 2009, months after we'll be there!

http://new.disneyecho.emuck.com/cgi-bin....y182036

And Disneygeek's latest photos of DL and California Adventure dated 5/15/09 indicate a lot of rehab and closures and rebuilding going on, particularly in CA due to Imagineering retheming the entire park to be the California Walt Disney found when he first moved there from the midwest to start his movie career.

http://new.disneyecho.emuck.com/cgi-bin....t=16192

I hope all that or a lot of it will be cleared out by the end of July.  Also when we were out there a year ago we experienced our first earthquake, followed about a month later at home by evacuating for hurricane Gustav and putting up with soon to follow hurricane Ike.  We want calm and serene Mother Nature in 2009 !

I AM SO TICKLED FOR YOU GUYS!!!!!!    Very very excited for you!  ....I think it's terrific that you have this opportunity!  You all deserve it!

I will be very interested in your trip reports and your impression of the changes.  We have not been there since our honeymoon 6/01...since WDW is a long plane ride away we have been discussing a road trip to where I used to live in LA area (87-91) and including some days at Disneyland, of course!  (It's an eighteen hour drive from here).  My (as usual) amazing mother-in-law wants to help us go  (depending on Joe's health and the chemo situation, which looks like he may have a break at that time).   Keeping our fingers crossed!

By the way, have you seen those WDW cards on sale at gift card kiosks.  I saw some yesterday at one of the large grocery stores out here and it said everyone gets in for the Kid's price?  Might be something to look at.  If you want me to get more info on that, let me know.  I would be glad to.

Anyhoo,,,,YAAAY FOR YOU GUYS!  This is my happy dance for y'all!

:happydance:  :fireworks:  :happydance:  :fireworks:

Still remembering my June 7, 2004 Port Orleans French Quarter vacation...
...and the April 21-25, 2005 WDW vacation with mom-in-law and sis-in-law

When I'm at WDW I'm 8 years old again!
