Today these are on Broadway, in future years they will be traveling Broadway shows coming to a performance theater near you, then to local repertory.... and someday to high schools.  Great that Disney is doing these shows!

Disney Scoops 17 Tony Nominations for NEWSIES and PETER AND THE STARCATCHER
Tuesday, May 1, 2012; 09:05 AM - by BWW News Desk

Newsies, the breakout new American musical, today received eight Tony® Award nominations including Best Musical. Additionally, Newsies was recognized with nominations for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Jeremy Jordan), Best Original Score (Alan Menken and Jack Feldman), Best Book of a Musical (Harvey Fierstein), Best Direction of a Musical (Jeff Calhoun), Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Tobin Ost and Sven Ortel), and Best Orchestrations (Danny Troob).

Meanwhile, Peter and the Starcatcher, developed in a multi-year process by Disney Theatrical Productions, and produced on Broadway by Nancy Nagel Gibbs, Greg Schaffert, Eva Price, Tom Smedes, and Disney Theatrical Productions, received nine nominations including Best Play, Best Direction of a Play (Roger Rees and Alex Timbers), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play (Christian Borle), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play (Celia Keenan-Bolger), Best Original Score (Wayne Barker and Rick Elice), Best Scenic Design of a Play (Donyale Werle), Best Costume Design of a Play (Paloma Young), Best Sound Design of a Play (Darron L. West), and Best Lighting Design of a Play (Jeff Croiter).

This season, Newsies has already been nominated for seven Outer Critics Circle Awards, six Drama Desk Awards and two Drama League Awards, including Best Musical nods from all three organizations.

Newsies, features music by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act), lyrics by Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony® Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy). Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River revival) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific revival).

The Broadway company of Newsies features Jeremy Jordan as Jack Kelly, John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber, Capathia Jenkins as Medda Larkin, Ben Fankhauser as Davey, Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Crutchie, and Lewis Grosso, and Matthew Schechter alternating the role of Les.

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.

Newsies is inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.

The Nederlander Theatre box office hours are Monday through Saturday 10am – 8pm and Sunday 10:30am – 7pm. Newsies will be performed on the following schedule through June 17th (with some exceptions): Monday at 7pm, Wednesday at 2pm & 7:30pm, Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 2pm and 8pm, and Sunday at 1pm and 6:30pm.

Best ticket availability is for performances Sunday evenings at 6:30pm and Monday evenings at 7pm.

Beginning June 18th Newsies will be performed on the following schedule (with some exceptions): Monday – Wednesday at 7:30pm, Friday – Saturday at 8pm, Wednesday & Saturday at 2pm and Sunday at 3pm.

For more information on Newsies, please visit NewsiesTheMusical.com, Facebook.com/Newsies and Twitter.com/Newsies.

End of quoted material.

You can find more information via Google News Advanced Search about the Tony Awards and telecast and the individual plays and actors and crew nominated.

And congrats to Alen Mencken, who wrote with Howard Ashman originally on Broadway before being discovered by then Disney CEO Michael Eisner and then wrote music for the Disney animated films "The Little Mermaid" "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", then after Howard Ashman died Alan Mencken continued song composition for Disney.  Nice to see him honored again, this time for going back "home" to Broadway musicals.

Break a leg, everyone at Disney !

Sunday night June 10, 2012 on CBS, if you're into the Disney Broadway stage shows and musicals tune into the Tony Awards telecast and this year root for two Disney shows: "Newsies" and "Peter and the Starcatchers) (prequel of "Peter Pan").  List of nominees here.

Eventually hit Broadway shows form traveling companies and go from town to town, so look, someday, for both of these in or near your city on the stage.  Original Broadway Cast music albums might be out or available for download.  Look for the 1990's Disney live-action musical movie "Newsies" and download it to see the source material for that Broadway musical show.

Alan Mencken won his first Tony Award last night for "Newsies".  He's been nominated for Tonys and Oscars and won Oscars for his work with Disney since "The Little Mermaid".  And he's age 62 now!

Link to all Tony winners:

http://www.tonyawards.com/en_US/nominees/winners.html

The winners of Tony Awards for Disney, out of 17 nominations Disney won 7.

"Newsies" Two Tony Awards:

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) written for the theater: Music Alan Mencken, Lyrics Jack Feldman)

Best Choreography: Christopher Gattelll

"Peter and the Star Catcher" Five Tony Awards:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play: Christian Borle

Best Scenic Design of a Play: Donyale Werle

Best Costume Design of a Play:  Paloma Young

Best Lighting Design of a Play: Jeff Crolter

Best Sound Design of a Play: Darron L. West

There is still a cult of fandom for "Newsies" amount teenagers and 'tweens.  The musical has gotten positive to mixed reviews.

"Peter and the Starcatcher" is based on a book that is also about to be turned into a Disney film.  Reviews are positive for the play.

Look for these, someday, to tour the US in local and regional "Broadway on tour"-type shows, and maybe even someday be performed as high school productions.

Congratulations, Disney!
