We are thinking of going tent camping to FW for the first time next May.  I see several people talk about the different loops to stay at, but am curious which one is the best for a family of 4 (2 parents, a 10 yr old, and 7 yr old).  And is May a good time to go?  ANy comments will be greatly welcome!

Can't help with the tent camping but depending on when in May it's a great month to go. We plan on going (hopefully) May 14-28th

My DW and I have tent camped at Ft. Wilderness several times in different loops over the years.  100, 200, 300, and 2000.  The two primary tent/popup/small trailer/van camper loops are 1500 and 2000.  As stated earlier, 1500 is the closest loop to the Meadows and 2000 is the furthest camping loop from the amenities.  Internal buses run to both loops, so getting around the campground is similar (however, there are more buses serving 1500 and thus the frequency is higher).  The campsites are large enough for a large cabin tent and two smaller dome tents.  There are some things that Disney omits from their FAQ pages and brochures - the fort is very dark at night, so bring small flashlights to navigate back to the campsite if you are returning from the parks at night (also helpful for those night time treks to the comfort stations)...I bring christmas rope lights and connect them to an outdoor timer to turn on the lights after dark and thus makes it easier to find the campsite and the tent zipper pull...the sites have electricity and water.  Plan on warm to hot weather in May and don't forget to bring umbrellas and ponchos for the occasional cloudburst (some tent campers also bring small room air-conditioners or fans).  Racoons do inhabit the campground, so plan your overnight food storage carefully (they know how to open boxes and coolers).  If you are a drinker and/or smoker I recommend that you purchase these supplies off-property.  As far as activities for the kids, there are a lot of choices...playgrounds, nightly movies, gamerooms, petting farm, etc, and lots of other kids.  These tips should get you started and if you need any other information or have any questions, just ask.

My family tent camped at FW the last week of May and first week of June.  The weather was actually very nice, but prepare for a little rain.  It rained so hard one night that our tent started holding all the water on top and started to drip.  It is wise to tie a tarp above the tent that will keep out the heavy rain.

We stayed on Loop 1500 with 2 large tents and 10 people total.  My sister came with us with her 3 kids and we had 3 kids.  There was actually quite a bit of room, but we did have to rearrange the tents so they fit perfectly.  With only a family of 4, you should have plenty of room.

We didn't see any raccoons, but we had some birds that wanted to carry off our hot dog buns.  And, we had a opossum walk up to the campsite, but didn't get into anything.  So, you shouldn't have too many problems.

We also brought our bikes that came in handy!!  It helped to get us to the swimming pool, campfire movie, and market.  You can walk, but it is a bit of journey.  And, our campsite was on the other side of the comfort station, which isn't too far, but having a bike when you need to go to the bathroom in a hurry was very helpful.  They also have golf carts to rent, but taking our bikes saved us quite a bit of money.  And, having more money for souvenirs is always a plus.

And, I recommend waiting until your first day to go grocery shopping instead of traveling with them.  With lack of experience, we stocked our car with groceries, and it was a waste of space.  FW is not far from Wal-Mart Super Center and some other local grocery stores.  So, next time we go, we are just going to save some room and buy our own groceries when we get there.

Another recommendation for you is, plan some time to relax at the Fort.  There are so many things to do that you will miss out on if you spend your time at Disney every day.  We only took one day off and regretted it.  They have an even better pool now with a waterslide.  And, the campfire movies are so much fun, you don't want to miss.  I know I am looking forward to going back and spending more time there.

Oh, buy some cheap rain ponchos before you leave at Wal-Mart, etc.  You can get them for $.99 and they can pack easily in your backpacks.  We only had to use ours one day at Animal Kingdom, but we got to go on most of the rides eventhough it was still raining.  We even went on the wet rides since it was raining and we had our ponchos.  And, being outside at your campsite, if it rains then you can still stand outside with your rain ponchos.

You are going to love staying at Fort Wilderness, and we found the tents to be fantastic!!  We never once regretted tent camping and look forward to doing it again.  So, enjoy your trip and I am excited for you!!!

Good topic!!! Thanks for the info! We are trying to decide between staying at Pop Century again or tent camping at FW. I used to stay at FW all the time growing up (in a trailer, not tent) and I really think my 6 year old would LOVE it but my husband is hesitent to tent camp in early june, even though it would save some money. I just love with smell and atmosphere at FW. Brings back so many wonderful memories!! We always stayed in the 1500 loop. Great spot!

My brother-in-law was totally against the idea of tent camping.  It wasn't his thing, but we talked him into it when we showed him how much money we could save.  Good news is:  He loved it!!  We stayed a total of 9 nights in tents and didn't have one bad night.  The weather was nice the first week of June and we enjoyed the outdoor cooking.  The guests at FW are so different than at a hotel.  Everyone is so friendly and its like a big happy family!!

So, maybe you can talk your hubby into trying it out.
