And the culprit had help....
Folks, even with an unfamiliar rental car even though you're at Pixie-Dusted Disney thieves can help themselves if you're too distracted or too naive when you travel. Just because you're at Disney you're NOT safe somehow from the world's pond scum, from crime, from theft, robbery, or break-ins. Thefts and break-ins happen, even at Disney, folks. Yes they do!
Think huge unauthorized credit or debit card charges if it was the adult's wallets or purses stolen instead of "only" children's cash. Think identity theft. Think massive time-consuming hassles of having to notify the police, your bank, your credit card company and the credit bureaus like TransUnion and Experion and having this burden on your back when you're supposed to be enjoying Pixie-Dusted Disney.
Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and sometimes life's lessons happen in adulthood. I feel for this family and their children, and hope for a much happier ending to the story. Maybe it would have happened anyway, this crime. But at least it could have been minimized by the vacationing family by hiding valuables, putting valuables in the hotel safe, and locking the rental car doors if they weren't locked already and double-checking the car doors were locked and things well-hidden.
