Yoo Hoo, Disney EchoEars!

There's more discussion about the ongoing refurbishment of Space Mountain at Disneyland over in the Vault: Disney Echo archives.

d_dreamer, a little hard to read your message.  The problem with Disneyland's version of Space Mountain is it was discovered there are serious structural problems with the attraction.  It was closed almost a year ago for that reason, but due to budgets already being set the work couldn't begin right away.  According to ongoing reading of Al Lutz' MiceAge.com Disneyland-watchdog site, Space Mountain will not even be up and running in time for Disneyland's official celebration of their 50th Anniversary on July 17, 2005.  The official announcement of when Space Mountain will be re-opened hasn't been made yet.  Considering all the problems Big Thunder Mountain has been having with accidents and the State of California scrutinizing ride safety, Space Mountain likely will not re-open until the rebuilding process is complete and the ride deemed safe enough, and no telling when that will be.  Just keep tabs on Disney fan sites such as Disney Echo, and as it gets much much closer to your trip simply check in and see how things at Disneyland are going regarding Space Mountain.  On the plus side:  Matt Ouimet, new president of Disneyland, is doing a marvelous job of sprucing up the park!  New roofs!  New paint jobs on the buildings!  Wood rot replaced!  A new spirit of caring about Disneyland is in the air!  When you and friends do get to go to The Happiest Place on Earth, it will look gorgeous! :D

Ditto to what Carol said!  DL is looking better and better each time I'm there, which is usually a couple times a month.  They've been given the budget to fix things that they didn't think they'd ever be able to fix!

As for Space Mountain, [and this is entirely a guess on my part and is not based on any "inside" information], DL will obviously try to have it re-built and running smoothly as soon as they possibly can, and my guess is that Matt Ouimet et. al. will get a hefty budget to try to make it happen ASAP.  Firstly, it'll obviously be better for the advertising run-up to the 50th b'day, plus the more money Eisner throws at DL now, the more he can [try to] claim that Roy was wrong when he said DL was looking horrible.  Eisner should be giving DL the money simply because it's the right thing to be done, but if he gives it the money for selfish, immature reasons -- DL is still getting the infusion of cash!  There's been so many things spruced up lately it's almost hard to keep track!!  It's looking mighty good around Walt's original Magic Kingdom!

Yep, they found structural problems on the track structure so serious they had to immediately shut it down and start rebuilding.  Seriously, no lie.  Thank heavens, given the fatal accident on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in September 2003, they found this when the park was closed and no one was riding and during a routine inspection.  So the new and improved Space Mountain at Disneyland (we're talking the park in Anaheim, California) won't even be open in time for the official 50th Anniversary of the park July 17, 2005.  But it will be open later in the year.

July? I cannot wait. After all these years, I am still a big fan of the ride. I remember sharing the front pod with my cousin whenI was little- we bumped heads the whole way and could not stop laughing :p
