There will be a brand new Disney theme park, in a new city, in a few years….  In Shanghai, China.  Numerous news reports are on Google News Advanced Search with key word of "Disney", go over and take a look, this is but one of hundreds.

And notice:  It's partially government owned.

Shanghai to own 57 pct of new Disney park -paper
Wed Nov 4, 2009 8:25pm EST

BEIJING, Nov 5 (Reuters) - An investment company controlled by the Shanghai city government will own a majority stake in a planned Disney theme park that won key government approval this week, the People's Daily reported on Thursday.

Shanghai officials on Wednesday announced that the park had gotten key central government approval ahead of a planned visit by U.S. president Barack Obama this month.

They did not release a shareholding structure for the park, and the plan still faces more detailed talks between Disney and Shanghai officials.

The People's Daily, the Communist Party's most important newspaper, said on Thursday that an investment company owned by the municipal government would hold 57 percent of the park, while Walt Disney Co. (DIS.N) would take 43 percent. It cited informed sources.

It is expected that the costs of acquiring land and moving existing residents will reach 24 billion yuan ($3.52 billion), in line with the cost of a park in Hong Kong that has struggled with lower-than-expected attendance since it opened in 2005.

Disney has long sought to build in Shanghai, a wealthy city of about 19 million people that is ringed by the prosperous Yangtze Delta, home to tens of millions more potential visitors.

It was less enthusiastic about building near Beijing, a much less prosperous city with few other large population centers in the immediate vicinity. ($1=6.826 Yuan)

Is Disney diluting itself worldwide, or expanding to offer itself to more markets?  What do you think of the news?  Feel free to comment.

Hong Kong Disneyland: Eisner's folly.
Shanghai: Iger's folly.

I'll stay on record as saying I wish they would build one in Australia, and that in turn they would open a pavillion in EPCOT of that country as well.

I remember reading a couple of times about Disney asking China for pandas for ANimal Kingdom and they said no over and over. The comments were that when China had it's own Disney park, then Animal Kingdom would have pandas.  I wonder if that will happen now or not?

I always thought Disney would go into Dubai next... but Universal snatched it up first.  This China decision surprises me a bit.

I don't think we can count on this Chinese park having a Liberty Square either...

There shouldn't be much of a problem with Main Street however. I mean can anybody tell how much Disney merchandise there is that isn't made in China?
